Sit Stand

When we stand, our upper bodyweight is above the pelvis, which is in a neutral, balanced position. When we sit in a traditional chair, the pelvis reclines and becomes unbalanced, and our bodyweight is now pushing down behind the pelvis. This stresses particularly the lumbar region, so we need a backrest to take the weight of and support our back.

We’re listing a lot of saddle stools here because we believe they’re particularly good for sitting health. The more open angle at the hips creates less stress on the back, and because the pelvis is balanced, we don’t need a backrest. For those that really want a back rest, small lumbar supports are available as an option on some saddles.couple of saddle chairssaddle chair and spine

We sit a lot higher on a saddle stool, so the working height needs to be considered, ideally it’ll be paired with a height adjustable desk.

Because we’re now using our own core muscles to sit upright, for most people switching from a traditional chair with a backrest, there will be a period of adjustment. At first, you may find that you’re finding half an hour is enough time, and it’ll take 2-3 weeks to become adjusted to your new, healthier position.

Sitting still all day is bad for our health. In this section we list products that encourage greater movement when sitting, and in general work particularly well with a height adjustable desk.

Our saddle stools come from Score in The Netherlands, and Salli from Finland.

The Salli chairs all have a split seat, which is beneficial for pressure relief.

Both have a choice of seat size. Score call their larger seat Jumper, and the smaller one Amazone. We find most people prefer the Amazone, but you really need to try them for yourself to be sure. The larger Jumper is perhaps a little easier to get used to for those transitioning to saddles from traditional chairs.

Salli offer a standard size seat, and a small. The small was originally designed for children, but some smaller built women prefer it over the standard.

And both have a choice of mechanisms. Basically these are: Fixed – no movement in the seat at all. Tilt – the seat can be tilted forward, particularly beneficial for dentists and surgical work. Swing/Balance – a small amount of movement in every direction, the seat moves naturally with the body. We recommend these models for most people. Salli also have models with an option to adjust the width of the pads – Swingfit and Multiadjuster. The Salli video shows the differences.

Both have a range of accessories, not all of which are listed here. If you want a lumbar support, those for the Score models are excellent.

We can order any saddle in any colour and finish you like. These are built to order for you and generally take about 4 weeks to arrive. However we try to keep a few in stock for immediate despatch. We buy these in bulk to save on carriage costs and pass that saving on to you. Please take a look at the ‘Special Offers’ page to see what we have available.
