To some people, this isn’t important at all. It may be an office chair, it’s going to live in a study, no one else in the house is going to see it, and nor are you when you’re sat in it. Black it is then.
But for most people this is a major purchase. And it doesn’t matter where in the house it is going to be, you want to smile whenever you approach it. Colour of course is a very personal thing. Some will want a bright lime green: it’ll energise and make you feel ready for work. Others may want a more serious note, a brown or grey, maybe some texture in the fabric to lend it some depth.
But it’s not just the colour, the fabric itself is important. Vegans of course won’t want anything with wool or leather in it, which removes a lot of the choice and makes the decision somewhat simpler. But even with polyesters there’s plenty of choice, Camira fabrics for example offer 29 synthetic fabrics for task seating.
The current pandemic is bringing considerations not thought so important before, and fabrics that are easily cleaned are becoming commonplace when selecting furniture for larger offices.
Some wools look and feel very luxurious, and are often recommended for people who struggle with temperature control, but can be more expensive. Same for leather, but it’s a classic look that never goes away.
You also want to be sure it’s going to last. Many chairs have a 10 year warranty, but that won’t cover the fabric for that long. Fabrics have a measure for durability. Look for the ‘Martindale’ figure. It represents the amount of rubbing a fabric should withstand before it wears. Anything over 50,000 is pretty good. Some fabrics, Garbriels ‘Select’ for example, which is 80% wool has a Martindale figure of 200,000.
We have seen chairs over 15 years old, still with their original covers that are still looking good.
So choose well, a good chair will be with you for a long time.
