Pretty much every chair we sell has some sort of dynamic movement built into it.
I’ve written before about different types of mechanisms found on standard lumbar support chairs. See here
Our soft tissues, ligaments and intervertebral discs need hydrating and nourishing and the body can’t do this well when it’s sat still.
When we stand the pelvis is in a neutral, balanced position and our weight is neatly stacked above it, taken to the ground via the legs. When we sit, we place nearly all our weight on the pelvis, and it tilts backwards. Now our weight is pushing down behind the pelvis and this stresses our lumbar spine.
So the normal solution is to sit in a chair with a backrest which we can lean into and take our weight to relieve the strain on the lumbar spine. And if we combine a supportive correctly fitting backrest and chair with some dynamic movement this works well.
The very best products designed to support our spines and pelvis in a neutral balanced posture often do not use a backrest. Think about it – you don’t need a backrest when you’re walking, and a fit human can walk for hours with no issues.
Most of these products come in the shape of saddle stools, and as brilliant as they are, there are compromises that mean they won’t work for some. You sit at a higher level than on a chair, so you need a height adjustable desk. And some people simply want to lie back and relax sometimes, and that’s ok, but aside from a few simple stretching devices and lumbar supports, saddle stools will never be relaxing.
We have had the Corechair in stock for a while. It supports the pelvis with a deeply sculpted anatomically shaped seat which works at the height of a ‘normal’ chair. And its mechanism has loads of movement in every direction. But it only has a small lumbar support. Again, that’s all that it needs, but not necessarily all that people want.
They’ve now produced a new model with an independent and flexible thoracic support and we think it’s fabulous.
